Saunas and Immune Support: What the Evidence Actually Shows
The short answer: A sauna session produces real, measurable physiological responses — your core temperature rises, your heart rate climbs, blood flow to the skin increases, and you sweat. Those are well-documented effects. What the evidence does not establish is that saunas “strengthen” the immune system, make you resistant to infection, or prevent illness. High-quality human trials on saunas and immunity are sparse, and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has specifically warned infrared-sauna sellers against immune-protection marketing. So the honest framing is this: enjoy a sauna as a relaxing heat-therapy habit, and rely on the fundamentals that genuinely support immune health — sleep, nutrition, regular activity, and hydration.
Below is a plain-English look at what actually happens in a sauna, which claims are overstated, and what the research does and does not show — so you can make an informed decision.
What actually happens in your body during a sauna session
These are the physiological responses that heat exposure reliably produces — they are descriptions of what the body does, not promises of a health outcome:
- Core temperature rises. Sitting in a hot room raises your skin and, over time, your core body temperature.
- Heart rate increases. A review of the sauna literature notes that heart rate during a typical session can rise to levels comparable with low-to-moderate physical exercise as the body works to shed heat.
- Blood vessels dilate and circulation shifts toward the skin. This is how your body moves heat outward to cool itself.
- You sweat. Sweating is thermoregulation — your body's cooling mechanism — not a cleansing process (more on that below).
These acute responses are genuine. The important nuance is that a short-term physiological change is not the same thing as a proven, lasting health benefit — and it is certainly not the same as immunity to illness.
Does a sauna “boost” your immune system?
This is the claim you will see most often, and it is not supported by strong evidence. Here is what the research landscape actually looks like:
- A frequently cited early trial — Ernst and colleagues, Annals of Medicine (1990), “Regular sauna bathing and the incidence of common colds” — followed roughly 50 volunteers over six months and reported fewer self-recorded colds in the sauna group during the second half of the study. It is a small, decades-old study that, to our knowledge, has not been replicated at scale. On its own it does not establish that saunas prevent illness.
- Beyond that, rigorous, controlled human trials tying sauna use specifically to measurable immune outcomes are limited. There is not a body of competent, reliable evidence that would support a claim that a sauna — infrared or traditional — makes you resistant to infection.
Regulators have been explicit here. In 2020 the FTC sent warning letters to infrared-sauna companies over exactly this kind of copy, calling immune-protection framing an unlawful, unsubstantiated health claim. As the agency put it, “it is unlawful… to advertise that a product can prevent, treat, or cure human disease unless you possess competent and reliable scientific evidence.” We don't hold that level of evidence for our saunas, so we won't make that claim — and you should be skeptical of any sauna brand that does.
You may also see marketing that describes sauna heat as an “artificial fever” that helps the body fight infection. That framing is not supported by reliable human evidence and was among the claims regulators flagged. Treat it as marketing, not fact.
The “detox through sweat” myth
A lot of sauna copy leans on “detox.” It is worth being clear: sweating is your body's way of cooling down, not a meaningful detoxification process. Human sweat is composed predominantly of water and electrolytes such as sodium and chloride; it is not a significant route for clearing “toxins” or heavy metals. Filtering waste from the blood is the job of your liver and kidneys. The FTC has taken enforcement action against products marketed on toxin-removal claims — famously charging the marketers of Kinoki Foot Pads with deceptive advertising for claiming their product could draw toxins and heavy metals from the body. Sweating feels good and cools you off; it is not clinically meaningful detoxification.
What the strongest sauna research actually studies
The most substantial body of sauna research is not about immunity at all — it is observational cardiovascular data from Finland. In a widely cited prospective cohort (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015, “Association Between Sauna Bathing and Fatal Cardiovascular and All-Cause Mortality Events”), men who used traditional Finnish saunas more frequently showed a statistical association with lower cardiovascular mortality over the follow-up period.
Two honest caveats matter:
- It is an observational association, not proof of cause and effect. Frequent sauna users may differ from infrequent users in many ways (activity, income, baseline health) that the study cannot fully separate out.
- It studied traditional Finnish saunas in a specific population and says nothing about immunity or infection. It cannot be used to claim that any particular sauna delivers a disease benefit.

- Sleep. Sleep is closely tied to immune function. - Listen to your body and end the session if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or unwell.
