Full-Spectrum Infrared Saunas: Near, Mid & Far Infrared Explained

Understand how full-spectrum infrared saunas combine near, mid, and far infrared wavelengths — what each does, who they benefit most, and how Sun Home's full-spectrum models compare.

What Is a Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna?

A full-spectrum infrared sauna uses heaters that emit all three ranges of the infrared spectrum — near infrared (NIR), mid infrared (MIR), and far infrared (FIR) — in a single session. Most budget and mid-range infrared saunas emit only far infrared. Full-spectrum saunas deliver a broader range of wavelengths, each targeting different depths and functions in the body.

The term "full-spectrum" refers specifically to infrared light coverage — not the visible light spectrum. A full-spectrum infrared sauna combines shorter-wave near infrared with longer-wave far infrared, giving you access to benefits that single-spectrum saunas cannot deliver on their own.

Near, Mid, and Far Infrared: What Each Wavelength Does

  • Near infrared (NIR, 700–1400 nm): Penetrates the skin's surface to support cell renewal, wound healing, and collagen production. This is the same wavelength range used in clinical photobiomodulation therapy.
  • Mid infrared (MIR, 1400–3000 nm): Reaches deeper into soft tissue to improve circulation, reduce joint stiffness, and aid in pain relief.
  • Far infrared (FIR, 3000 nm–1 mm): Penetrates 1.5–2 inches into the body for deep-core heating, promoting detoxification through sweat, muscle recovery, and cardiovascular benefits. Far infrared is the most studied wavelength for sauna therapy.

A full-spectrum sauna combines all three in every session. A far-infrared-only sauna delivers deep heating but misses the near and mid infrared benefits.

Full-Spectrum vs. Far Infrared: How to Choose

Full-Spectrum Infrared

  • Wavelengths: Near + mid + far infrared combined
  • Depth: Surface-level cell renewal through deep-tissue heating
  • Best for: Comprehensive wellness — recovery, skin health, detox, and circulation in one session
  • Sun Home models: Equinox (2P, 3P), Eclipse (2P, 4P), Luminar (2P, 5P)

Far Infrared Only

  • Wavelengths: Far infrared only (3000 nm–1 mm)
  • Depth: Deep-core heating (1.5–2 inches penetration)
  • Best for: Deep detoxification, muscle recovery, cardiovascular support
  • Sun Home models: Solstice (1P, 2P, 3P, 4P)

The Eclipse line adds another dimension: integrated red light therapy LEDs (630–850 nm wavelengths) alongside full-spectrum infrared, delivering multi-therapy sessions that combine infrared heat with photobiomodulation in a single cabin.

Sun Home Full-Spectrum Infrared Sauna Models

Equinox Line (Indoor, Full-Spectrum)

The Equinox 2-Person and 3-Person saunas use True Wave™ full-spectrum infrared heaters in hand-selected, kiln-dried eucalyptus cabins. Both run on 120V with a 20A dedicated circuit (NEMA 5-20P plug). EMF levels are independently tested at 0.3–0.5 mG by Vitatech Electromagnetics. ETL and ETL-C certified. Backed by a 7-year residential warranty on cabinetry and heaters, 3 years on controls.

Eclipse Line (Indoor, Full-Spectrum + Red Light)

The Eclipse 2-Person and 4-Person combine full-spectrum infrared with integrated red light therapy LEDs for multi-therapy sessions. Built with Canadian Red Cedar interiors and patented EMF/ELF shielding (0.5 mG). The Eclipse 2P has 8 heaters (6 far-infrared + 2 full-spectrum) producing 2,820W total power and reaching 165°F. The Eclipse 2P runs on 120V; the Eclipse 4P requires 240V — a licensed electrician is recommended. Both require a 20A dedicated circuit. Backed by a Lifetime Limited Warranty.

Luminar Line (Outdoor, Full-Spectrum)

The Luminar 2-Person and 5-Person outdoor saunas pair a Canadian Red Cedar interior with an aerospace-grade aluminum exterior shell for year-round durability in any climate. Both reach temperatures up to 170°F — the highest in Sun Home's lineup. Both require 240V with a 20A dedicated circuit; a licensed electrician is recommended. A red light therapy panel is available as an add-on. Backed by a Lifetime Limited Warranty.

Safety, EMF, and Technical Specs

EMF and Safety Certifications

All Sun Home infrared saunas are independently tested by Vitatech Electromagnetics at 0.3–0.5 mG at seated distance — among the lowest in the industry. The Eclipse line features patented EMF/ELF shielding technology. The Equinox and Solstice lines are ETL and ETL-C certified, confirming compliance with North American electrical safety standards.

Electrical Requirements

All models require a 20A dedicated circuit — not a standard household 15A outlet. The Equinox (2P, 3P) runs on 120V (NEMA 5-20P plug). The Eclipse 2P runs on 120V with a NEMA L5-30P dedicated outlet. The Eclipse 4P and all Luminar models require 240V — a licensed electrician is recommended for 240V installations.

Construction and Assembly

Sun Home saunas use a tool-free Magne-Seal™ panel-locking system — panels snap together without power tools, nails, or clips. Assembly typically takes 30–60 minutes with two people. All panels are kiln-dried and air-dried to 7% moisture content using only ultra-low-VOC adhesives and non-toxic wood treatments.
