We get this question about our infrared saunas and steam showers all the time:
“Is it ok / safe to wear my apple watch, fit bit, or smartwatch in a sauna or steam shower?”
And we don’t blame you and asked ourselves the exact question! We use our apple watch everyday for fitness features and would love to use it in every wellbeing activity possible. Using an apple watch or smartwatch in the sauna or steam shower will allow you to easily keep track of your time to make sure you aren’t working your body to hard or staying too long in the heat, as this could lead to a reverse effect on health. An apple watch / smartwatch in the sauna also allows you to track calories burned, heart rate, and that text you just got from grandma! Not to mention if you slap on some AirPods you can jam out to some relaxing tunes when enjoying your infrared sauna or steam shower.
We reached out to Apple and a variety of other smartwatch manufacturers and in short, we all received the same answer: no. Unfortunately, it’s not safe or recommended to wear your apple watch or similar smartwatch in a traditional sauna, outdoor sauna, infrared sauna, steam room, or steam shower. The high temperature and humidity levels can unfortunately damage the internal mechanics and screen of your apple watch or smartwatch.
This answer is pretty much standard across all wrist tracking devices. Even if you have Apple care or a manufacturer warranty on your smartwatch or smartphone, it won’t cover water or heat-related damages that you would incur by bringing your apple watch, smartwatch, or even iphone into a sauna or steam room or steam shower.
Our advice! Relieve yourself of all technology and immerse yourself in the experience of being with just yourself in your infrared sauna or steam-shower. Stay well my friends!
