How to Choose the Best Infrared Sauna for Your Home
The best infrared sauna for home use depends on five factors: heater technology (full-spectrum vs. far infrared), build quality (wood type and construction), electrical compatibility with your home, EMF safety (third-party tested, not self-reported), and warranty depth. A well-built infrared sauna should last 15–20+ years with daily use — the upfront choice matters.
- Heater spectrum: Full-spectrum (near + mid + far infrared) delivers the broadest range of benefits. Far infrared is proven for deep heating and detox.
- Wood: Dense hardwoods (eucalyptus, cedar) resist warping over thousands of heating cycles. Avoid cheap softwoods like hemlock.
- Electrical: All quality infrared saunas require a 20A dedicated circuit — not a standard 15A household outlet. Larger models need 240V.
- EMF levels: Look for third-party testing by an independent lab (not manufacturer claims). Levels below 1.0 mG at seated distance are considered very low.
- Warranty: A strong warranty reflects manufacturer confidence in build quality. Look for 5+ years on cabinetry and heaters minimum.
Types of Infrared Saunas
Full-Spectrum Infrared
Combines near, mid, and far infrared wavelengths. Near infrared supports cell renewal and collagen production. Mid infrared improves circulation and reduces joint stiffness. Far infrared penetrates 1.5–2 inches for deep detox and muscle recovery. Sun Home's Equinox, Eclipse, and Luminar lines are all full-spectrum.
Far Infrared Only
Uses only far infrared heaters — the most researched wavelength for sauna therapy. Effective for deep heating, cardiovascular benefits, and detoxification. Generally lower cost than full-spectrum models. Sun Home's Solstice line uses far infrared heaters.
Infrared + Red Light Therapy
Some saunas integrate red light therapy LEDs (630–850 nm) alongside infrared heaters, combining heat therapy with photobiomodulation for skin health, muscle recovery, and inflammation reduction. Sun Home's Eclipse line has built-in red light therapy. The Pod 1 combines infrared heat with red light therapy in a single-person pod. The Luminar offers a red light therapy panel as an add-on accessory.
Best Infrared Sauna by Use Case
Best Infrared Sauna for Small Spaces
The Solstice 1-Person fits in roughly a 3' × 3' footprint. The Equinox 2-Person works in most spare rooms or basement corners. Both run on 120V with a 20A dedicated circuit. Built with eucalyptus hardwood and tool-free Magne-Seal™ assembly — no permanent modifications to your space.
Best Infrared Sauna for Apartments
Apartment saunas need to be compact, plug into 120V power, and assemble without permanent modifications. The Solstice 1–3 Person and Equinox 2–3 Person lines all run on 120V with a 20A dedicated circuit and use tool-free Magne-Seal™ panels — full disassembly if you move. Note: the Solstice 4-Person requires 240V and is not apartment-friendly.
Best Infrared Sauna for Recovery and Athletes
The Eclipse line combines full-spectrum infrared with red light therapy LEDs (630–850 nm) in a single session — targeting muscle recovery, inflammation reduction, and skin health simultaneously. The removable benches allow for in-cabin yoga and stretching. The Pod 1 offers a single-person alternative combining infrared with red light therapy.
Best Outdoor Infrared Sauna
The Luminar outdoor series pairs a Canadian Red Cedar interior with an aerospace-grade aluminum exterior shell for year-round durability in any climate. Available in 2-person and 5-person configurations. Both run on 240V with a 20A dedicated circuit and reach temperatures up to 170°F — the highest in Sun Home's lineup. A licensed electrician is recommended for installation.
Best Multi-Therapy Infrared Sauna
The Eclipse line delivers the most therapies in a single session: full-spectrum infrared heat plus integrated red light therapy LEDs. Built with Canadian Red Cedar and patented EMF/ELF shielding at 0.5 mG. The Eclipse 2P runs on 120V; the 4P requires 240V. Both backed by a Lifetime Limited Warranty.
What to Look for in an Infrared Sauna
Wood Quality
Many mass-market saunas use Canadian Hemlock, an inexpensive softwood prone to warping under repeated heating cycles. Sun Home's indoor infrared saunas (Equinox and Solstice) are built with hand-selected, kiln-dried eucalyptus — a dense hardwood that resists cracking through thousands of heating cycles. The Eclipse, Pod 1, and Luminar lines use Canadian Western Red Cedar — naturally antimicrobial, moisture-resistant, and aromatic. All panels are dried to 7% moisture content with ultra-low-VOC adhesives and non-toxic wood treatments.
EMF Safety
EMF (electromagnetic field) levels should be independently tested and verified — not self-reported by the manufacturer. Sun Home saunas are tested by Vitatech Electromagnetics at 0.3–0.5 mG at seated distance, among the lowest in the industry. The Eclipse line features patented EMF/ELF shielding technology.
Electrical Requirements
All Sun Home infrared saunas require a 20A dedicated circuit. This is not a standard household 15A outlet — check with an electrician if your space doesn't have one. Most models (Equinox, Solstice 1–3P, Eclipse 2P) run on 120V. The Solstice 4P, Eclipse 4P, and all Luminar models require 240V — a licensed electrician is recommended for 240V installations.
Warranty Coverage
Sun Home's Eclipse, Luminar, and Pod 1 lines are backed by a Lifetime Limited Warranty. The Equinox and Solstice lines include a 7-year residential warranty on cabinetry and heaters with 3 years on controls. A strong warranty reflects manufacturer confidence — avoid saunas with coverage under 3 years.

Installation, Assembly, and Safety
Assembly
Sun Home saunas use a tool-free Magne-Seal™ panel-locking system — pieces snap together with no power tools, nails, clips, or buckles. Assembly typically takes 30–60 minutes with two people.
Safety Certifications
Always verify ETL or UL certification, which confirms the sauna meets North American electrical safety standards. Sun Home's Equinox and Solstice lines are ETL and ETL-C certified. EMF levels should be third-party verified — Sun Home saunas are independently tested by Vitatech Electromagnetics at 0.3–0.5 mG at seated distance.
Placement and Ventilation
Indoor infrared saunas should be placed on a flat, level surface with at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides for ventilation. No special flooring or drainage is required — infrared saunas produce significantly less moisture than traditional saunas. Outdoor models (Luminar) are weather-rated for year-round placement.
