Electrical Requirements Overview

Last updated: June 8, 2026

Getting your electrical setup right is the first step to a safe, smooth install. This guide walks through the requirements for every Sun Home sauna, cold plunge, and accessory so you know exactly what to prepare before your unit arrives.

Safety first. The information here is a planning reference. Before installing any Sun Home product, confirm the correct circuit, breaker, and outlet for your specific model and serial number with a licensed electrician. The most up-to-date specifications live on each product's page at sunhomesaunas.com — defer to those values if anything looks different from what you read here. Never use an extension cord with a sauna or cold plunge.

General Guidelines

For every Sun Home sauna and cold plunge, we recommend:

  • A dedicated circuit and outlet for the unit — no other appliances on that breaker.
  • Plug your unit directly into a properly rated outlet. No extension cords, power strips, or surge protectors.
  • For outdoor installs, the outlet must be weather-protected and GFCI-protected.
  • If you are unsure about your panel capacity, breaker type, or wiring, have a licensed electrician confirm everything before your unit arrives.

Traditional Sauna Electrical Requirements

Solaris Traditional Outdoor Saunas

Solaris traditional saunas are hard-wired — there is no plug. A licensed electrician must run wiring from your panel to the sauna and connect it directly to the heater.

Solaris S

  • Power Supply: 240V, 25A

Solaris M

  • Power Supply: 240V, 40A

Solaris installs must be done by a licensed electrician. Outdoor placement and panel run can take longer than a same-day install — schedule electrical work ahead of delivery.

Cold Plunge Electrical Requirements

Cold Plunge Pro (CPP and APEX)

  • Voltage: 120V
  • Amp Draw: 12A
  • Plug Type: Standard 120V outlet (NEMA 5-15P)
  • Circuit: Dedicated GFCI-protected circuit

The Cold Plunge Pro is designed to run continuously and is optimized for energy efficiency.

Cold Plunge Standard (Inflatable)

  • Voltage: 110–120V
  • Amp Draw: 11A
  • Plug Type: Standard 120V outlet (NEMA 5-15P)
  • Circuit: GFCI-protected outlet required

Cold plunge safety. The power source must stay dry and covered. Do not operate the unit in rain. Confirm water is flowing before turning the chiller on.

Accessories

Sun Home accessories plug into standard household outlets and do not need a dedicated circuit:

  • Red Light Therapy Panel — standard 120V outlet, runs independently of the sauna.
  • Sauna Blanket — standard 120V outlet.
  • Red Light Face Mask — battery-powered with USB charging; no outlet needed during use.
  • Smart TV Add-On — powered from the sauna's internal outlet; available on Eclipse 4-Person and Luminar 5-Person only. No external electrical work required.

Outdoor Installation Notes

If you are installing your unit outdoors:

  • Use a GFCI-protected outlet.
  • Keep all electrical connections dry and covered, including in rain and snow.
  • Position the unit so the factory cord reaches the outlet directly — no extension cords.
  • Do not cover active electrical components while the unit is running.

When to Involve an Electrician

Work with a licensed electrician if any of the following apply:

  • You need a new dedicated circuit installed.
  • You are unsure your electrical panel can carry the additional load.
  • Your install area is far from an existing properly rated outlet.
  • You are installing a 240V model: Luminar 2-Person, Luminar 5-Person, Eclipse 4-Person, Solstice 4-Person, Solaris S, or Solaris M.
  • You are installing a Solaris traditional sauna (hard-wired only).

Pro Tips

  • Confirm your electrical setup before your unit ships.
  • Match your outlet to the plug type listed for your model — locking (L-prefix) plugs need locking receptacles.
  • Keep your unit close enough to the outlet that the factory cord reaches without strain.
  • Avoid extension cords and power strips, both for safety and for consistent heating performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my sauna work with a standard 15-amp household outlet?

Only the cold plunges and accessories run on standard 15-amp household outlets. Every Sun Home sauna needs a dedicated circuit — most often a 20-amp 120V circuit, with the Luminar, Eclipse 4-Person, Solstice 4-Person, and Solaris models requiring 240V. Check the table above for your specific model.

Do I need a dedicated circuit?

Yes — for every Sun Home sauna and for the Cold Plunge Pro. A dedicated circuit prevents breaker trips, supports consistent heating, and protects the unit's electronics over time.

Can I use an extension cord?

No. Extension cords reduce performance, can overheat under sustained load, and void electrical safety guidance. Plug directly into a properly rated outlet, and plan your install location around outlet placement.

How much power does the sauna or cold plunge use?

Power use depends on the model. Rough operating draw at peak heating:

  • Luminar 2-Person — about 4.8 kWh per hour of use
  • Luminar 5-Person — about 7.2 kWh per hour of use
  • Eclipse 2-Person — about 2.8 kWh per hour of use
  • Eclipse 4-Person — about 5.3 kWh per hour of use
  • Equinox 2-Person / 3-Person — about 1.9 kWh per hour of use
  • Solstice 2-Person — about 2.0 kWh per hour of use
  • Solstice 3-Person — about 2.3 kWh per hour of use
  • Solstice 4-Person — about 2.8 kWh per hour of use
  • Pod 1-Person — about 1.7 kWh per hour of use

Can I install my sauna outdoors?

The Luminar and Solaris lines are designed for outdoor use. Eclipse, Equinox, Solstice, and Pod are designed for indoor use only — confirm your model on the product page before placing the unit. For any outdoor install, use a weather-protected GFCI outlet and keep electrical connections dry.

What happens if my electrical setup is not sufficient?

You may see slow heating, breaker trips, or the unit failing to power on. Under-voltage can also damage components over time. Match your circuit, breaker, and outlet to the specifications above (and on your model's product page) before first use.

Do I need an electrician?

Always for 240V installs, Solaris hard-wired installs, and any case where a new circuit is needed. For most 120V indoor saunas, if you already have a properly rated dedicated 20A or 30A outlet at the install location, you may be able to plug in directly — but if you are at all unsure about your panel, breaker, or outlet, have a licensed electrician confirm before delivery.

Where can I find the exact specs for my model?

The product page for each model on sunhomesaunas.com lists the canonical electrical specifications. If anything in this guide looks different from what is on the product page or your spec sheet, defer to the product page — it is the source of truth.
