Sun Home Technology, Explained: How Our Saunas and Cold Plunges Are Engineered

Full-Spectrum Infrared, Done Properly

"Full-spectrum" has a specific meaning: near, mid, and far infrared wavelengths delivered together. Many infrared saunas rely on carbon panels alone, which are primarily far-infrared emitters — a carbon panel by itself cannot make a sauna full-spectrum. Every cabin in our full-spectrum lineup pairs dedicated full-spectrum heaters with far-infrared panels — a broader wavelength profile than carbon-only systems can deliver, combining near and mid infrared with the ambient warmth of far infrared.

Heater count and placement matter as much as wavelength. The Luminar 5-Person surrounds the cabin with 15 heaters — 10 full-spectrum and 5 far-infrared — and both Luminar models reach a published 170°F, the highest in our infrared lineup. The Eclipse series publishes its full electrical record: the 2-Person runs 2,820W on a dedicated 120V circuit, the 4-Person runs 5,300W on a dedicated 240V circuit with 16 total heaters — the largest array in our lineup — and both reach 165°F.

Temperatures are published manufacturer maximums. Dedicated circuits should be installed by a licensed electrician.

Integrated Red Light Therapy

Red light in a Sun Home Eclipse is not an accent light. Every Eclipse ships with dual front-facing red light therapy towers as standard equipment — each built around a 360-LED, 900W panel — emitting at 650 nm (red) and 850 nm (near-infrared). Measured irradiance runs 180–250 mW/cm² at six inches, averaging 219 mW/cm². The Pod includes integrated red light at the same wavelengths, and Luminar owners can add a dedicated red light tower.

Materials and Construction

The Luminar's matte black aerospace-grade aluminum exterior is protected by U.S. Design Patent D1,079,961 (granted June 2025) and wraps a Canadian Red Cedar interior — a shell engineered to hold cabin temperature through four-season outdoor use. Across the lineup, cabins are hand-sanded and assembled with our Magne-Seal system, which reduces reliance on adhesive at primary panel joints. Our adhesive testing found no formaldehyde or BTEX compounds above reporting limits, with VOC content below 0.001% by weight, and an independent cabin-air sample analyzed under EPA Method TO-15 by an AIHA-accredited lab measured total VOCs at 27 μg/m³ — classified "Low." On the electromagnetic side, an independent Vitatech survey measured 0.3–0.9 mG at three feet from the heaters. What this means for youEven, enveloping heat from every side of the cabin instead of a single hot wall, red light built in rather than bolted on, and materials whose emissions were measured by independent labs — not just described.

Traditional Heat, Built Around a Reference Heater

A traditional sauna is its heater, so when we built our first indoor traditional line, we didn't invent one — we engineered the cabin around one of the category's reference heater brands. The Nova runs a Wi-Fi-enabled HUUM DROP electric rock heater — 6kW in the 3-Person, 7.5kW in the 6-Person — driving the room to 230°F with true water-on-stones löyly, the wave of steam that defines authentic Finnish bathing. The cabin itself is Canadian cedar with a hand-laid Estonian carbonized tile wall, dual-stack benches, and built-in electronic ventilation that circulates fresh air through the session.

For outdoor traditional bathing, the Solaris line pairs thermo-alder construction with HUUM heat — the DROP 6kW or the HIVE Mini 9kW — and reaches the same 230°F ceiling.

Cold Plunges That Make Actual Ice

Most cold plunges chill water. Ours are engineered to freeze it. The Pro Series — the Cold Plunge Pro and step-entry Pro Apex — uses a German-engineered cooling system that reaches a published 28°F and forms floating ice for a true ice bath, with Polar Jet Mode's double-pump hydro jets keeping chilled water circulating around your body. Water care is automated: a three-step sanitation system runs ozone injection, a UV sterilization chamber, and a sediment filter on roughly ten-minute cycles. Both models hold serious water volume — 150 gallons in the Pro, 180 in the Apex — and operate on 120V power through a standard NEMA 5-15 household plug, on a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit — published on each product page as a “120V / 15A dedicated GFCI circuit,” with the model’s manual as the controlling electrical reference. No plumbing or hardwiring is required, though an electrician may be needed if a compliant dedicated GFCI outlet isn’t already in place.

The Performance Series brings the same engineering philosophy to a portable format: high-pressure drop-stitch tubs with an included 1 HP smart chiller that cools to 32°F, ozone injection sanitation, 20-micron filtration, and an insulated shell that conserves energy between sessions.

Efficiency is part of the design. Maintaining a Cold Plunge Pro at temperature runs approximately 1 kWh per day — a manufacturer estimate that varies with ambient temperature, setpoint, insulation, and local rates — because the chiller cycles rather than running continuously, and the Apex's Eco Mode ends each cooling cycle at your setpoint and restarts only once water warms 5°F above it.

Smart Controls, Sound, and Light

Bluetooth is not app control — remote preheat and scheduling require a real Wi-Fi platform, and we built our own. The Sun Home app (a brand-owned platform, not a white-label shell) controls the Eclipse, Pod, and Luminar saunas and the Cold Plunge Pro series: preheat on the drive home, schedule sessions, and run guided breathwork and meditation from the same screen. The Nova's HUUM DROP heater connects through HUUM's own Wi-Fi app for remote preheat and scheduling, and Performance Series plunges include Wi-Fi app control for temperature and scheduling.

Inside the cabin, the Luminar carries a high-fidelity premium Bluetooth surround system, while the Equinox and Solstice are fitted with Blaupunkt Bluetooth audio and the Eclipse includes Bluetooth audio. Built-in chromotherapy lighting on select models rounds out the sensory system.

Tested, Certified, and Backed

Trust should rest on documents, not slogans. Our EMF performance was surveyed by Vitatech, an independent electromagnetic consultancy, and our cabin-air VOC sample was analyzed by an AIHA-accredited laboratory under EPA Method TO-15 — both reports are summarized on the safety & testing hub. Third-party certification runs through Intertek: the Equinox and Solstice are ETL Listed for the U.S. and Canada, and the Equinox, Solstice, and Luminar carry RoHS compliance covering ten restricted substances in electrical components.
