Irradiance — optical power delivered per unit area, in mW/cm², at a stated distance — is the specification that determines whether a light system is delivering a meaningful dose or producing visible red light. Combined with exposure time and treatment area, it yields fluence, which is what photobiomodulation research actually reports.
Earlier versions of this guide called the absence of irradiance an industry-wide gap that no brand had closed. That was too convenient a claim, and it is not accurate. LIT Method publishes 70 mW/cm² alongside 360 LEDs and 660 + 850 nm wavelengths for its InfraPod portable unit. So the specification is publishable in a consumer sauna product — it simply has not been published for any of the fixed cabins in this comparison, including the Eclipse.
The accurate statement is narrower and less flattering: irradiance is not published for any indoor cabin reviewed here, and at least one manufacturer in the adjacent portable category publishes it. That is a gap our own flagship has not closed, not a physical limitation of the category.
Why wattage is not a substitute
The Eclipse publishes two panels carrying a 900W rating each. Earlier versions of this guide summed those into "1,800W of optical output" and argued that higher wattage means more photons reaching the body. That is not a supportable inference, for three reasons.
- The published figure's basis is not stated. Current documentation does not establish whether 900W represents nominal LED-chip capacity, actual electrical input, maximum driver capacity, or emitted optical power. Nor does it explain how two 900W panels relate to the cabin's total 2,820W rating on a 23.5A draw — a relationship that would have to be reconciled before a simultaneous-operation figure could be claimed.
- Electrical input is not optical output. LED efficiency, driver losses, and thermal derating all sit between the two, and none is published.
- Photobiomodulation follows a biphasic dose response. More input is not automatically better; above an optimum, effect can decline. Treating wattage as a proxy for benefit assumes a monotonic relationship the literature does not support.

What the research says about whole-body light
A 2025 systematic review in Lasers in Medical Science examined whole-body photobiomodulation across five studies and 105 physically active participants. Two studies reported better sleep quality. None of the five reported any benefit on fatigue biomarkers or exercise performance. Localised photobiomodulation has a more favourable literature. A cabin-scale panel array sits closer to the whole-body case, which is another reason hardware specifications cannot be converted automatically into product-specific outcomes.
Panel Placement: Correcting the Front-and-Back Claim
Earlier versions of this guide described the Eclipse as having one red light tower in front and one behind the user, delivering simultaneous anterior and posterior exposure with no repositioning. That description is not supported by the current documentation.
Sun Home's current Eclipse installation documentation depicts both red light panels mounted to the front of the cabin, facing the seated user. The rear wall carries the two full-spectrum infrared heaters. Dedicated posterior red light exposure is therefore not established, and neither is full-body coverage without repositioning.
Correct wording: the Eclipse 2 uses two front-mounted red light panels facing the seated user. Users who want posterior exposure should expect to turn during the session, as they would with any front-facing panel.
This retraction removes four claims that appeared throughout the previous version — "one front, one back," "simultaneous front-and-back full-body coverage," "no repositioning needed," and "your entire body is exposed from both directions." None of them should be reused.

Two corrections worth stating explicitly
Garage Gym Reviews' temperature figure belongs to the Equinox, not the Eclipse. Earlier versions of this guide said the Eclipse shares the Equinox platform and therefore reaches or has been verified at 165–170°F. The two cabins have different heater counts, different wattage, different electrical service, and different construction. GGR's hands-on result is an Equinox result and cannot be transferred.

The Eclipse is Canadian red cedar at 165°F, not hemlock at 170°F. Earlier versions of this guide published both errors, alongside a 660 nm figure. The current Eclipse 2 specification block publishes 650 nm and 850 nm. Sun Home's own collection page states the same system as 630–850 nm in one module and 660 + 850 nm in another. Published results are distance-specific ranges: 0.6–4.0 mG at one foot, 0.4–1.8 mG at two feet, 0.3–0.9 mG at three feet. The 0.5 mG figure falls inside the three-foot range. It is representative across configurations, not an exact-model reading, and the published summary does not describe a test state with red light panels operating.
- VOC. One time-regulated cabin-air sample, April 2, 2026, VERT Environmental Project #66958, analysed by AIHA-accredited LA Testing via EPA Method TO-15. Result 27 µg/m³ TVOC, classified "Low" under the report's framework. The published summary does not identify the tested unit as the Eclipse.

The warranty does not clearly cover the treatment panels
Earlier versions of this guide said the Eclipse's red light system is covered by the limited lifetime term and that the sauna includes in-home technician service in all 50 states. The current governing warranty supports neither claim.

The practical implication is the same across all three brands: the most expensive and most failure-prone component of a sauna light system is the component none of them separately warrants. Before buying any of these, get panel, driver, controller, housing, labor, and freight coverage confirmed in writing.
On in-home service specifically: Sun Home's published warranty includes parts, labor, and shipping for the first 90 days and does not establish a blanket entitlement to technician dispatch after that. Earlier versions of our own content overstated this.

Reading the result honestly
The LIT Method BeautyBox finishes first at 36/100, four points ahead of the Eclipse 2. The margin comes entirely from cost and electrical burden — it delivers published dual wavelengths on a standard household circuit for $4,500 less, all-in. On the optical categories specifically the Eclipse leads, because it publishes LED count, per-panel ratings, and documented mounting where LIT publishes only wavelengths.
The ceiling is the real finding. The highest score in this category is 36 out of 100. Every model scored zero on irradiance (15 points), dosing guidance (10 points), and independent optical verification (10 points) — 35 points that no cabin currently earns. Any article naming a "best red light sauna" without disclosing that is describing a preference, not a measurement.
Two points of the Eclipse's gap are self-inflicted. Its wavelength score is 6 rather than 8 solely because Sun Home publishes three different figures for the same system across its own pages. Synchronising those pages would move the Eclipse to 34 without changing the product at all.

When Integrated Light Is Worth Paying For
It is worth it if the friction of a second device is what stops you from using red light at all. A cabin that runs both modalities in one sitting removes a real behavioural barrier, and that is the honest core of the integrated value proposition — convenience and adherence, not superior dosimetry.
It is worth it if you want one warranty, one control system, and one installation rather than managing a separate panel, its mounting, and its own coverage terms.
It may not be worth it if you already own a quality standalone panel. Standalone devices frequently publish irradiance at stated distances, and they let you control distance, duration, and body position precisely — three variables that a fixed cabin panel largely decides for you.
