How We Compared

Five kinds of evidence are labeled separately throughout. Manufacturer specifications come from each brand's live product pages. Controlling installation and care documentation — owner's manuals and manufacturer care pages — governs maintenance and weather claims, and takes precedence over marketing copy, including our own. Named-laboratory reports are cited with lab, date, method, and sampling scope, and their limits are stated. Third-party observations are attributed to the named reviewer and identified as observations under that reviewer's conditions rather than standardized measurements. Editorial conclusions are this guide's reasoning. Where cabin-only kits and complete assembled products are compared, the configuration is named, because a barrel kit price and a fully assembled cabin price are not the same number. Where we could not locate a figure, this guide says so rather than estimating. No matched head-to-head testing exists across these three categories for sweat volume, energy consumption, or service life, and none is implied.

Three Categories, Not Two

The most common error in this comparison is treating "traditional" as one product. Electric and wood-fired traditional saunas differ in power, controls, fuel, and upkeep as much as either differs from infrared.

That split matters for a practical reason: a buyer who reads "traditional saunas cannot be started from your phone" will wrongly rule out an electric cabin that can be. Almost Heaven, for example, publishes that Wi-Fi control panels and heater upgrades are available on its barrel saunas, alongside a dial that can delay start by up to eight hours.

Warm-Up Time Is Model- and Climate-Specific

Blanket ranges mislead in both directions, so here are the figures each manufacturer actually publishes.

Outdoor infrared. In a review of the 5-person Luminar, the cabin was reported reaching 130°F in roughly ten minutes and 140°F about ten minutes after that. Sun Home's own Luminar 2 documentation, however, advises allowing approximately 60 minutes for heat-up at ambient temperatures at or below 40°F. Both figures are true; they describe different conditions. Infrared warms faster in mild weather because it does not need to bring a large air mass and stone set up to temperature, and it slows considerably in cold weather like anything else.

Traditional electric. Almost Heaven publishes that a properly installed 6kW heater in the Salem 2-person barrel reaches 180–200°F in 45–60 minutes, and that the larger Pinnacle can push to 200°F in around 40 minutes. Barrel geometry helps here — less interior volume to heat than a rectangular room of similar capacity.

Traditional wood-fired. Warm-up depends on stove size, fuel type and dryness, draft, cabin volume, insulation, and ambient temperature, plus the time to establish the fire. Manufacturers rarely publish a single figure, and buyers should ask for one specific to the stove and cabin they are ordering.

The honest summary: traditional cabins generally need longer warm-up because they heat air and stone mass rather than the body, but the gap in your backyard depends on the heater, the cabin, the season, and the temperature you actually want.

Exterior Care: What the Manufacturers Actually Require

This is where the category is most often oversold, including by us, so this section follows the controlling care documentation rather than marketing copy.

Aluminum-exterior infrared. The Luminar's aerospace-grade aluminum exterior, stainless steel roof, and marine-grade matte black hardware do not require the periodic staining or sealing associated with exposed wood cabins. That is the defensible advantage, and it is a real one. It is not the same as no maintenance. Sun Home's Luminar documentation still directs owners to maintain adequate drainage around the base, clear accumulated snow before use, site the sauna on a suitable level foundation with specified clearances, keep corrosive chemicals away from the cabin, and use the supplied protective cover during cold-weather heat-up. Owners should also expect to clean exterior surfaces and glass, inspect seals and hardware, and maintain the electrical installation. Outdoor-rated and weather-resistant is the accurate description; nothing left outside year-round is maintenance-free.

Cedar. Western red cedar is naturally rot-resistant and is the standard barrel material. Almost Heaven cabins ship in natural or dark finishes and use stainless steel bands, hinges, and fasteners. Treatment intervals vary with climate, exposure, roof design, and whether you want to preserve the original color or accept natural greying — ask for the written schedule for the exact cabin.

Thermowood. This is where the universal "stain every one to three years" claim breaks down completely. Redwood Outdoors' own care documentation describes exterior stain-and-seal as optional — something you can apply to maintain the original look and extend the wood's life — and states that stain-and-seal products typically last about five to seven years before reapplication, with region-specific advice recommended. Their Thermowood documentation describes timber heat-treated in kilns to improve stability and moisture resistance without chemical treatment. Their care page also gives two instructions worth repeating for any wood sauna: never apply standard stain or sealant to the interior, because high heat and humidity can cause off-gassing, and check band tension every few months.

The correct framing across all three: exterior maintenance depends on the exact material and manufacturer. Some brands recommend treatment, others describe it as optional and mainly cosmetic. Compare the written maintenance schedule for the specific cabin rather than assuming a category-wide interval.

Installed Cost and Operating Cost

The lowest product-card price is rarely the number that matters, because the four categories bundle differently. Before comparing prices, confirm what each figure includes.

On the traditional side, Sun Home's Solaris Small lists at $36,399 $37,199 and the Medium at $45,399 $46,199 — a luxury tier well above the mainstream traditional market, which buyers should know before treating it as an alternative to a barrel. Among independent brands, Almost Heaven cedar barrels with Harvia heaters occupy roughly the $4,000–$6,000 range depending on size, finish, door, window, and control configuration, and Redwood Outdoors Thermowood cabins begin around $6,600 before shipping. Configuration changes these figures materially, so price the exact build.

Beyond the cabin, a 240V dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician typically runs $500–$1,500 depending on panel proximity and local rates, and site preparation adds a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Wood-fired cabins avoid the heater circuit but add fuel and a chimney package.

Operating cost, calculated rather than asserted. Use this and substitute your own numbers instead of trusting a category-wide figure:

Session energy (kWh) = heater input in kW × warm-up hours + average operating draw in kW × session hours. Multiply by your electricity rate.

Worked illustrations only, not measurements: the Luminar 2 draws from a 240V/20A circuit with a maximum input near 4.8kW, though actual draw cycles below maximum once the cabin reaches setpoint; a representative 6kW electric traditional heater running 50 minutes of warm-up plus a 30-minute session at reduced cycling lands meaningfully higher per session than a comparable infrared session; a 9kW heater in a large cabin higher still. Wood-fired cost is firewood quantity multiplied by local cord price, which varies widely by region. Infrared generally uses less energy per session because it runs at lower air temperature with shorter mild-weather warm-up, but no matched test across these categories has been published, so treat any fixed kWh comparison — including ours in earlier versions of this article — as an estimate rather than a measurement.

EMF and VOC Evidence, With Scope Attached

Two corrections matter here. First, EMF is not an infrared-only question: any electric heater, power unit, control board, wiring, lighting circuit, or Wi-Fi module is electrical equipment. Only a wood stove itself produces no electrical field, and even then accessory lighting and controls may. Second, a single headline number is not a whole-cabin result.

What this establishes is that Sun Home commissioned and published named-lab measurements with distances and methods disclosed. It does not establish that competitor cabins perform worse — only that comparable published measurements were not located.

The Heat Experience Itself

Löyly is the decisive difference and it is not bridgeable. Pouring water over hot stones raises humidity and sharply intensifies perceived heat; infrared cabins have no stones and no steam mechanism, so this is a design difference rather than a missing accessory. If the steam ritual is what you want, traditional is the only answer, and a löyly-capable heater from a maker such as Harvia or HUUM is what delivers it.

On the other side, infrared runs at lower air temperature — 170°F on the Luminar against 180–200°F and above on traditional heaters — and warms the body through direct radiant heat rather than heating the air first. Some bathers prefer that; others find it less intense. What this guide will not claim is equivalence: sweat volume and physiological load depend on exposure duration, radiant intensity, humidity, acclimation, hydration, body size, and ambient conditions, and we did not identify a standardized head-to-head study establishing that infrared at 140–170°F produces the same sweat volume or heat dose as traditional sauna at 180–200°F. Both produce substantial heat exposure. The experiences are different, and preference is the honest deciding factor.

Who Should Buy Each Type

Buy traditional wood-fired if löyly matters, your site is off-grid or running a heater circuit is impractical, and you are willing to source firewood, tend a fire, and maintain a stove and chimney. It is the only category here that heats without an electrical heater circuit.

Buy traditional electric if you want löyly and high air temperature with switch-on convenience, and you accept a dedicated circuit. Current Wi-Fi heaters and control panels put remote preheat and scheduling in this category too, so ask which control package the quote includes. Cedar barrels with Harvia heaters from Almost Heaven are the mainstream entry point; Redwood Outdoors Thermowood cabins sit above them with lower-maintenance timber and more capacity.

Buy outdoor infrared if you want a cabin that stays outside without wood staining or sealing, faster warm-up in mild weather, app control with remote preheat, optional 660nm red light and 850nm near-infrared therapy, published named-lab EMF and VOC documentation, and contemporary architectural design. The Sun Home Luminar is built specifically for permanent exterior placement and ships fully assembled.

Buy neither yet if your decision depends on matched testing for sweat volume, energy consumption, temperature uniformity, or ten-year durability. None of the compared brands publishes that data.

Two notes on fit. The Luminar is not the right pick for every outdoor buyer: if budget is the binding constraint or steam is required, a cedar barrel or a budget 120V outdoor infrared cabin serves better, and we would rather point you there. And Sun Home's own traditional Solaris line is a luxury-tier product at $36,399 $37,199 and up — genuinely a different market from a $5,000 barrel, and worth naming as such rather than presenting as a like-for-like alternative.

The Decision Rule

Answer four questions in order. Do you need löyly? If yes, you are choosing between electric and wood-fired traditional, and infrared is out regardless of its other merits. Do you have or want an electrical circuit at the site? If not, wood-fired is the only option. How much exterior upkeep will you actually do? Aluminum removes the staining and sealing task entirely but not drainage, snow, seals, and cleaning; Thermowood makes treatment optional on a roughly five-to-seven-year cycle; cedar wants a schedule you should get in writing. What is the installed cost, not the cabin price? Add the circuit, the foundation, the controls, the stones, the chimney if applicable, and delivery. Only then compare — and get the warranty schedule and repair workflow for the exact model in writing, from any brand, including ours.
