Premium infrared saunas often cost more because selected models use more expensive heater systems and materials, publish third-party laboratory testing, include connected controls or red-light hardware, support outdoor installation, or offer longer component warranties. What public data cannot show is how much each of those items contributes to any specific sauna's retail price. Bills of materials, supplier pricing, labor inputs, testing invoices, warranty reserves, logistics costs, and gross margins were not published by any manufacturer we reviewed, ours included — so no article, including this one, can tell you that a given price is justified by build cost. Premium also does not guarantee that every model includes every premium feature. Compare named models, exact warranty terms, laboratory reports, electrical requirements, and current prices before deciding whether an upgrade is worth paying for.
What This Article Can and Cannot Establish
It is worth being precise about the difference, because "expensive because it costs more to build" is the standard answer in this category and it is not a supportable one without cost data.

Eight Things You May Receive at Higher Price Points
1. Heater type and spectrum
Carbon far-infrared panels commonly appear in lower-priced cabins, while full-spectrum systems generally add emitter types and electrical components, typically using halogen emitters alongside carbon panels — see the current full-spectrum models for configurations. Public data do not reveal what either heater system costs to produce. Who can skip it: if you want heat and sweat rather than near-infrared exposure specifically, far-infrared delivers that — and note that Sun Home's own entry model, the Solstice, is far-infrared, so this is a model-level feature rather than a price-tier guarantee.
2. Cabinet materials and construction
Wood species affects material price, hardness, weight, machinability, appearance, and drying requirements. What it does not straightforwardly determine is cabinet longevity. Per USDA Forest Products Laboratory data, shrinking, swelling, warping, checking, and splitting result from moisture changes below the fiber-saturation point and vary by grain direction. Performance depends on species-specific shrinkage, moisture content, panel orientation, thickness, joinery, finishes, ventilation, and service conditions — density alone does not predict resistance to warping or a longer cabinet life.
Sun Home publishes kiln-dried and air-dried eucalyptus at 7% moisture content with pressed panels. The defensible claim about that specification is narrow and worth stating plainly: controlled low moisture content reduces dimensional movement and, because thermal conductivity in wood rises with moisture, also lowers heat loss through the panel relative to the same species at higher moisture. It is a published production target, which is more than most manufacturers we reviewed disclose. It is not evidence of a proven lifespan advantage, and we have no controlled multi-year comparison of eucalyptus against hemlock cabins under equal conditions. Who can skip it: buyers in stable indoor environments who are comfortable evaluating a cabin on published moisture content, panel thickness, and joinery rather than species name.
3. Third-party laboratory testing
Commissioning named laboratories costs money, and named-laboratory reports were unevenly published among the lower-cost models reviewed. Here is exactly what Sun Home's reports say, stated at the precision the documents support:
- EMF: Vitatech Electromagnetics reported 0.6–4.0 mG RMS at one foot, 0.4–1.8 mG at two feet, and 0.3–0.9 mG at three feet under the tested configurations, with higher readings closer to the heaters. The widely quoted 0.5 mG figure falls within the three-foot seated range — it is not a universal whole-cabin reading, and the published document is a summary of selected findings rather than the complete underlying report.
- VOC: a one-time cabin-air sample collected via Summa canister and analyzed by EPA Method TO-15 returned 27 µg/m³ total target VOC concentration under the sampled conditions. This was not a controlled emissions-chamber test with standardized product loading, conditioning, temperature, and ventilation protocols, and we do not describe it as one.
Both are on the safety testing page. Who can skip it: buyers who are satisfied with a manufacturer-stated figure. If you are not, ask any brand for the lab name, the date, the method, and the measurement distance — an EMF number without a distance is not a specification.
4. Electrical safety certification
Certification testing and listing fees are a real recurring cost. They are also frequently double-counted in marketing, including in earlier versions of this article. Intertek operates the ETL certification program, so "ETL" and "Intertek" are not two separate certifications stacked on top of each other. The accurate description of a typical premium cabin's status is an Intertek ETL listing covering applicable US and Canadian electrical-safety standards, plus separately documented RoHS compliance — two programs, not four. Ask any manufacturer for the exact listing or control number so you can look it up in Intertek's public directory rather than accepting a logo. Who can skip it: nobody. Electrical certification on a high-current appliance is worth confirming at every price point, and it is increasingly common below the premium tier.
5. Connected controls, red light, and app features
Integrated red-light panels, native apps, and wearable connectivity add hardware and ongoing software cost. They are also the features most often implied across a whole price tier when they belong to specific models — see the matrix below. Who can skip it: anyone who will set a temperature and a timer. A digital controller does that.
6. Outdoor construction
Outdoor-rated cabins use different exteriors, glazing, hardware, and assembly. The Sun Home Luminar requires dedicated 240V service and a licensed electrician, and pairs an aluminum exterior and stainless roof with a cedar interior, which eliminates the staining and sealing a wood-exterior outdoor cabin needs. Other outdoor models may have different electrical requirements, so verify the exact circuit for the model you are considering.
Two qualifications belong here rather than in fine print. The Luminar installation manual instructs users operating at or below 40°F to allow roughly 60 minutes for warm-up and keep the protective cover on during cold-condition heat-up, and it requires snow clearance before use. Separately, the warranty excludes damage from normal weathering, environmental exposure, weather events, water exposure, and operation outside published instructions. So the honest framing is that a metal exterior removes routine wood maintenance, not that outdoor placement is unconditional. Long-term corrosion and weathering performance have not been established by controlled product-specific testing from any manufacturer we reviewed. Who can skip it: anyone installing indoors. An outdoor-rated cabin indoors is money spent on weather resistance you will not use, plus a 240V circuit you may not need.
7. Warranty terms
Longer component coverage can create additional warranty exposure for a manufacturer, although public data do not reveal the reserve or service cost built into any product's price. It also needs stating at component level, because headline language conceals the structure. From the Sun Home warranty page: Eclipse, Luminar, and Pod carry a Lifetime Limited Warranty on cabinetry and heaters — Luminar's published breakdown adds three years on the exterior cabin, three years on controls, and one year on lighting, glass, and audio. Solstice and Equinox carry seven years on heaters and cabinetry with three years on controls. Confirm the exact schedule for your model before buying. Parts, labor, and shipping are included only for the first 90 days after delivery. After that, the customer pays labor and shipping even where the replacement part remains covered, and remedies are repair, replacement, or reimbursement at Sun Home's discretion.
Earlier versions of this article described nationwide in-home technician visits as an included benefit through the full component term. That is not what the warranty provides, and we have corrected it. Before buying from any brand, confirm whether local technician service is available, what it costs after the initial window, and who pays freight on a part. Who can skip it: buyers comfortable with a shorter term who would rather put the difference toward a repair fund.
8. Distribution and support model
Sales channels create different cost structures rather than one simply being higher. Direct-to-consumer companies may fund internal support staff and freight operations, while marketplace sellers may incur retailer commissions, fulfillment fees, customer-service costs, and retailer-managed returns. Public data do not reveal the net effect on any specific sauna's price, so treat this as a description of two service models rather than a quantified difference. What Lower-Cost Brands Now Offer
Earlier versions of this article described budget cabins as a uniform category: carbon-only far infrared, self-reported EMF, minimal certification, no advanced features, no outdoor models. That is no longer accurate and should not be used as a buying assumption. Lower-cost manufacturers increasingly publish third-party EMF verification, carry ETL certification for the US and Canada, and offer full-spectrum, red-light, high-heat, and outdoor models — categories that used to be exclusive to premium brands.
Those are manufacturer claims and warrant the same product-level scrutiny as ours — ask for lab names, dates, methods, and measurement distances from every brand. But the tier-based generalization does not hold, and a buyer who assumes it will overpay for features available for less. Compare named models.
When the Premium Is Not Worth It
- You want heat and sweat. A far-infrared cabin delivers that at a fraction of the price, and increasingly with certification and third-party EMF documentation.
- You will use it occasionally. Frequency drives the value of any sauna purchase more than tier does.
- You are installing indoors. Outdoor construction is cost you will not recover in use, and an outdoor model like the Luminar also carries a 240V requirement an indoor cabin may not need. Verify the circuit for the specific model.
- You will not use the technology. App control, guided content, and integrated red light are real hardware costs. If a temperature and a timer is your session, a digital controller is sufficient.
- You are comparing headline warranty years. Compare the component schedule and the labor window instead — a long parts term with a 90-day labor window is a different product from what the headline implies, at any brand.
